Wheat Disease Update: April 30, 2012

As your cereals disease headquarters, we are closely and continuously monitoring the development of threatening diseases across all cereal growing regions in the U.S. Although spring weather has recently been mild and favorable for planting, disease pressure remains a critical factor for wheat growers.

The Cereal Rust Bulletin reports the following:

  • Wheat leaf rust is spreading rapidly in South Texas.
  • Low levels of stripe rust were found in Oklahoma and Kansas.
  • Barley leaf rust is present in Delaware and in plots in southwestern and eastern Virginia.
Be sure to check here regularly for the latest disease updates, field observations and management recommendations for your area. The Cereals Disease Laboratory (CDL) delivers disease alerts via e-mail and regular web reports, and you can also sign up to receive e-mail alerts directly. The CDL website provides detailed summaries of the more threatening alerts over the past week.

Syngenta reminds growers of the two critical periods when disease can severely detract from the productivity of the crop:

Why FGS 2-5? This is when the number of spikelets per head is determined. Applied at 2 oz/A before jointing at the green up stage, Tilt® fungicide delivers proven early-season disease suppression while offering excellent application flexibility. Tilt can be easily applied in a tank-mix with a herbicide like Axial® XL or foliar fertilizers to reduce trips across the field.

Why FGS 8-10.5? This is when the flag leaf emerges and develops. Safeguarding the flag leaf is critical as it makes up 75 percent of the leaf area that feeds the head, making it essential to grain fill. A 14 oz/A application of Quilt® or Quilt Xcel® fungicide between FGS 8 to10.5 delivers longer-lasting, broader-spectrum control of damaging diseases, including rusts, powdery mildew, tan spot and Septoria, during this critical growth phase. Quilt brand fungicides contain the Power of Two™ proven brands to protect against disease, provide longer residual protection against foliar diseases and enhance Plant Performance™ to help the crop to reach its full yield potential. Quilt Xcel is equipped with increased levels of azoxystrobin to deliver curative and even greater preventive disease control in wheat and barley.

Cereal growers are encouraged to develop a disease management plan that includes preventive and curative fungicide options to protect their valuable crop investments.
